"Vacas das Cordas" celebrations

Villagers climb up a pole as a bull is set loose in the town
centre of Ponte da Lima June 6, 2007, as part of the annual "Vacas das Cordas"
celebrations. The event, a 350-year-old tradition, relives the moment when
Christians turned a pagan temple, dedicated to a goddess represented by a cow,
into a church. Villagers chain a bull to the church, then shower it with wine,
before releasing it along the village streets. [Reuters]
