中超限薪令(zhōngchāo xiànxīn lìng): Salary ceiling of Chinese Super League

China Daily | Updated: 2017-01-11 07:22

The General Administration of Sport of China recently said that it is considering introducing some measures in order to restrict excessive spending by Chinese Super League clubs on overpriced foreign players and promote the development of domestic talent.

In recent years, clubs in the Chinese Super League have introduced several foreign soccer players paid with sky-high salaries.

The introduction of foreign talents into the domestic soccer league aims to help promote Chinese men's soccer. However, the performance of the Chinese men's national soccer team has repeatedly let the public down in recent years despite the huge amounts of money invested in the foreign soccer players, which has drawn wide public concern and even criticism.

According to a spokesman of the General Administration of Sport, the authority is considering setting reasonable restrictions on soccer players' salaries for the healthy and long-term development of China's soccer. The move is expected to cool the red-hot market for foreign soccer players, which is somewhat irrational and goes against the healthy development of soccer in China.

According to the administration, such issues as clubs spending excessively on overpriced foreigners while neglecting investment in youth training have been hampering the long-term development of the game.

The administration is also considering establishing a soccer development fund in proportion to the clubs' investment in foreign soccer players, which will be used to develop homegrown talent. It also said more transparent financial auditing of clubs will be conducted.
