According to a China Youth Daily online survey that covered 3,214 people, 47.5 percent of the respondents said they or their family members would marry without "dowry", and only 23.3 percent were opposed to the idea. Since society is more open today, couples in love are expected to tie the knot without the lure of property, a house, a car or jewelry, which explains why the TV series, Naked Wedding, is so popular with viewers, says an article in China Youth Daily. Excerpts:
Though the protagonists in the TV drama, Naked Wedding, finally overcome all the obstacles and end up together, not every couple in real life are as lucky or persistent. On the contrary, material gains are what many young people strive for.
In this diversified age, people should be more tolerant to exceptional behaviors. But trying to marry millionaires is indeed an attempt to enter an unequal relationship, which some women dream of doing to avoid years of struggle. The fact is, it is almost impossible for a marriage based on "greed and luxury" to last long.
Everyone wishes to lead a meaningful and comfortable life. But many find themselves face to face with the harsh realities of life.
It is heartening to see that close to half the respondents to the China Youth Daily survey said that they would marry without regard to "dowry". May they live a long life with their spouses and savor every moment of their existence.
A marriage is happy or sad not because of money or the lack of it. In the long run, temporary material shortages do not mean the failure of a marriage or a person's existence.
A love that passes the test of marriage without greed is truly pure love, something that society today seems to lack the most. And pure love is also something every youth puzzled by material gain should dare to pursue.
