Makings of a great university

Tsinghua University officials have said they would take measures to transform the 100-year-old institution into one of the best in the world in the next nine years. But the university authorities need to implement a long list of reforms before the institution acquires a world-class status, says an article in Shanghai Morning Post. Excerpts:
With its 100-year anniversary approaching, Tsinghua University has got a shot in the arm from its officials, who have pledged to take steps to turn it into a world world-class university by 2020. They claim to have already made some progress in that direction.

In fact, data show that Tsinghua University teachers and students have published many academic works that have been praised by many scholars and other experts.
But they will have to do a lot than that to turn Tsinghua into a truly world-class university. Mei Yiqi, former president of Tsinghua University, once famously said: "It is not higher buildings, but the mastery over thoughts and the standing on higher ground that truly defines higher education."
Being one of the premier institutions of higher education in China, Tsinghua University has the responsibility of building a knowledge-based society and drawing the best brains from across the world to its portals to teach and encourage the younger generation.
As Premier Wen Jiabao said, universities should encourage more creative thinking. And like other universities in China, Tsinghua should introduce modern education methods and attach more importance to teaching, especially in its undergraduate departments, to become one of the best universities in the world.
