Comment on “‘Tiger moms’ popular in China” ( China Daily website on April 18)

Chinese Tiger Moms only pressure their kids to excel in exams or arts, not how to behave in a socially-responsible manner and have the right attitude towards other members of the community, to take care of public property and be civic-minded. It is not uncommon to see kids in school uniform littering or engaging in other anti-social behavior.

Tiger moms and Tiger dads are not good role models for their kids. Kids learn fast, when they see adults littering, spitting, talking very loudly in public, smoking in no-smoking places, driving through red lights, parking on pedestrian walkways, they will take all these as acceptable social behavior. I have actually seen a mom telling her child on a bus to throw her empty plastic drink bottle out of the window!!

Instead of just emphasis on passing exams with high scores, tiger moms and dads should raise their kids to be well-adjusted, responsible members of society, not little emperors. Character building is just as important.
