Comment on "Make smoking uncool for boys" (China Daily website, Jan 12)

The media in the United States have come up with some excellent advertisements on TV and radio, and in newspapers, which make smokers look like monsters, and many countries have banned smoking in public places.

China should learn from the effect the advertisements have had on Americans, especially the youth, and the anti-smoking measures taken by other countries to strengthen their own campaigns against smoking.

Research and examples can become powerful deterrents for smokers. For example, advertisements can show people dying of diseases caused by second-hand smoking, young children having breathing problems because of smoking, and how smoking reduces a person's efficiency and productivity.
