Vested interests have been using their power and money to violate people's rights, making a mockery of the social order because of the flaw in the legal and governance systems, says an article in Yangtze Daily, excerpts:
Yu Haibo, a 33-year-old billionaire of Chongqing city, marshaled hundreds of henchmen to block roads and punch policemen after his unauthorized buildings were demolished on Sept 30. Li Qiming, 22, knocked down two female students of Hebei University and drove to a dormitory to meet with his girlfriend on Oct 22. When he was stopped by angry witnesses, he screamed that his father was Li Gang, a deputy director of a local public security bureau. One of the students he knocked down died and the other was seriously injured.
The rich have been using their money and power for long to evade the law. Yu and Li are examples of the rich and powerful misusing their might to violate the law. Such people feel secure in the knowledge that they have strong backings to help them get through any trouble. They believe money and power can take care of all the problems anywhere in the country.
The government has to act immediately to rectify the situation and ensure social fairness and equality. The unfairness in wealth distribution and the lack of a counterbalance against local decision-makers are the fundamental reasons for the infectious corruption and violations of the law by the elite.
