Comment on "Debate: Auto Industry" (China Daily, Oct 11)

China is the largest producer of automobiles in the world, according to media reports.

It is true that the auto industry is a symbol of China's manufacturing sector and that the more automobiles it makes the more it will help its economic development.

Owning a car in China has become an indicator of higher living standard for a family today. But given China's huge population, the environment will suffer no end if every family, even if it's only in cities, owns a car.

Apart from consuming more energy and increasing pollution and traffic jams, people will also have problems finding a place to park their cars.

Hence, the development of China's auto industry should be controlled.

To control the overheated industry, policymakers should analyze the problems properly and maintain the auto production growth rate at a pace that matches the construction of traffic networks and urban parking areas. And automakers should focus more on their corporate social responsibilities than short-term profit.
