Comment on "47 killed in latest mine blast" (China Daily, June 22)

We feel sorry for the victims. But the government, mining companies and the public should think why there are so many mine disasters despite the existence of strict security control measures.

Greed is the main reason why so many companies operate coal mines illegally.

There is always a tacit understanding between such companies and some local government officials.

The companies try their best to make maximum profit through illegal means.

They bribe officials to ignore their violations. Lack of social responsibility has made such officials disregard human life.

The government should break the monopoly of the coal industry and give the public proper rights to supervise the activities of the companies and the governments.

Without proper supervision, mine disasters cannot be prevented. Therefore, a healthy social control mechanism for mining security is indispensable.

We hope mine disasters will be prevented and we can give future generations a harmonious society.
