Comment on "Importance of China's neighborhood" (China Daily, May 7)

I fear things are rapidly spiraling into confusion. The author makes a valid, reasoned argument. Where does all the references to racial bias and animosity come from? Most comments seem to radiate a sense of rage against whatever group they are not a part of.

We must live together, or perish together. A stark choice, and I hope we are capable of accomplishing it. Otherwise, we will all go down into the dark together. I say chose the path of humanity - together, let us build a future for our children, and their children. The past is past, and cannot be changed. We can only learn from our mistakes, dust off our clothes, and try again. We will succeed if we keep our eyes on the beacon of logic and reality. Modern technology is rapidly melting our species into one people.

It will surely be exciting and rewarding. Those who chose to cling blindly to the past will be left behind and forgotten. There is no gulf of understanding between the Chinese people and rest of the world that cannot be crossed.

I know this to be true from personal experience. We can have understanding, if we want it badly enough. I learned to speak Chinese because I wanted to understand the Chinese people, and my Chinese family members.
