Who are the heroes of this country?

The athlete who achieves some extraordinary sporting feat, or the celebrity who gives a stellar performance before a camera or on stage?

The businessman who channels his fortune into learn-to-read programs for the illiterate and underprivileged? The rebel who tries to change his ways toward society, or the civil servant trying to do his job, even in the face of danger?

At our sixth annual celebration of the country's heroes on Sunday, the spotlight was on nine individuals and a couple, who did something brave, bold or remarkable last year.

From Qian Xuesen and Min Enze - who are the founding fathers of China's space industry and trailblazers of scientific and technological development to Xie Yanxin and Luo Yingzhen - who have taken good care of their family members.

Our celebration of the lives of our national heroes and recognition of their contributions and sacrifices speaks of our stature as a nation. For no country can truly stand proud without recognition of its genesis and those who make it possible.

Heroism occurs on the grand, national scale as is represented by Qian, Min and Li Jianying who was a test pilot.

It is also present in our communities on a daily basis. There are brave, noble and selfless acts by individuals that change for the better the lives of others. Many of these acts are done quietly, away from the glare of publicity, because nothing is sought in return.

There are also the individuals who act without a thought for their own safety in saving lives in situations fraught with danger. Like the story of Meng Xiangbin, a People's Liberation Army soldier, who could not show up at the Sunday ceremony as he lost his life saving a drowning woman.

Then there are the teachers, policemen, nurses, social workers and others who, without thought of the inadequacy of monetary reward, change lives in their communities.

Most will never gain accolades.

But the annual celebration of national heroes has found the humble yet important figures in our communities.

To us, a hero is someone who is dedicated, focused, brave, persistent and eager to take risks in helping the community.
