BAGHDAD, May 21-- The Iraqi government halted the office of its Olympic Committee along with all of its related federations to hold elections and prepare a new law for the committee, government spokesman said on Wednesday.

"The Iraqi cabinet decided on its Tuesday session to suspend the executive office of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq ( NOCI) and all its federations," Ali al-Dabbagh said in a statement obtained by Xinhua.

"The government would form an interim committee headed by the minister of Youth and Sports with all the needed powers for three months to hold elections and to enact a new law for the new national Olympic committee," Dabbagh said.

The interim committee will run and supervise the activities of federations, he said.

In an interview with local Sharqiya television, Hussein Saeed, head of football federation, said he is afraid that such decision would lead to halt the activities of all federations, including the participation of Iraq's national soccer team in the qualifications of the 2010 World Cup championship in South Africa.
