NEW DELHI - Some 63 "pro-Tibet independence" activists were arrested on Wednesday for trying to storm the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi ahead of the arrival of the Olympic flame in the city.

About 100 "pro-Tibet independence" activists waved flags of the so-called "Tibetan government-in-exile" and some tried to scale the walls of the Chinese embassy, India's Asia News Service reported.

The activists, under the banner of "Tibetan Youth Congress," had a minor scuffle with security forces, the report said.

"We have detained 63 Tibetan activists for staging a protest in the restricted area," said a policeman.

Security at the Chinese embassy has been fortified for almost a month.

Fearing a recurrence of the disturbances that marred the torch relay in London and Paris, paramilitary forces and thousands of policemen have been posted along the two-km torch route from the presidential palace Rashtrapati Bhavan to the war memorial India Gate.

Some Tibetan separatists who had been camping in the city ahead of the Olympic torch relay on Thursday have reportedly gone missing, "probably to stage surprise attacks", said an intelligence official.

Supporters of the Dalai Lama have organized attacks on Chinese embassies and consulates in several countries including the United States, Canada, India, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Australia.
