Mexico eliminated from soccer qualifying

CARSON, California - Mexico missed out on qualifying for the Beijing Olympics despite trouncing Haiti 5-1 on Sunday night.

Mexico tied Canada for second place in Group B with four points apiece in the CONCACAF men's Olympic qualifying tournament, but Canada advances to the March 20 semifinals in Nashville, Tennessee based on goal differential after downing Guatemala 5-0, the group winner .

Haiti played without 11 players for most of the game after Judelin Avelska received a red card in the 28th minute, followed by Jean Paulin in the 83rd minute.

Cesar Villaluz and Edgar Andrade combined for Mexico's first two goals in the 18th and 61st minutes.

Haiti's Leonel Saint-Preux made it 2-1 in the 63rd minute, but Mexico's Santiago Fernandez scored in the 70th minute, followed by Enrique Esqueda in the 83rd and Luis Angel Landin in the 90th minute.

In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, Will Johnson and Tosaint Ricketts each scored two goals, and Kyle Hall had one, to lead Canada over Guatemala.
