The Executive Board of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) held its 79th meeting on Thursday to discuss measures to make the Beijing Paralympic Games as splendid as the Beijing Olympic Games.

After hearing a report on the preparations for the Paralympic Games, the meeting noted that staging successful Paralympics is an important part of the "high-level Olympics with distinguishing features" envisioned by the Chinese government. It is also a solemn promise China made to the international community.

To make the Paralympics equally splendid, BOCOG has made innovative efforts to prepare for the event. The organizational structure and coordinative mechanisms have been improved, cultural and communication activities for the Paralympics have intensified, in-depth work has been done on the competition schedule, the construction of accessible facilities has accelerated, the marketing program has progressed smoothly, services for the Paralympics have geared up and solid progress has been made in the volunteer program of the Paralympics.

The meeting noted that BOCOG is the first Olympic organizing committee to prepare concurrently for the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games. High attention should be paid to the goal of making both Games equally splendid. Special arrangement should be made to strengthen the lineup of the venue team staff for the Paralympics. Serious efforts should be made to accelerate the construction of accessible facilities, enhance the media and communications work, improve the transportation plans, increase exchanges and links with international sport organizations for the disabled and push forward the recruitment and training of volunteers. Through the Paralympics, support and care for the disabled people should be enhanced.

The meeting also heard a report on the preparations for SportAccord, the annual international sports convention, which is the largest and most influential meeting in world sport circles. It will be attended by the International Sports Federations affiliated to GAISF (General Association of International Sports Federations), ASOIF (Association of Summer Olympic International Federations) and AIOWF (Association of the International Olympic Winter Sports Federations). The meeting urged all-out efforts to prepare for the event which will take place from April 23 to 27 in Beijing.

The meeting also heard reports on the design of medals for the Paralympic Games, the working scheme for the sport display and the application of the electricity-powered bus for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.

The meeting was chaired by BOCOG President Liu Qi, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and secretary of Beijing Municipal CPC Committee.

Present at the meeting was also Chen Zhili, state councilor and BOCOG first vice-president.
