Liu Qi meets Rupert Murdoch

President of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (BOCOG) Liu Qi met with Chairman of News Corporation Rupert Murdoch in Beijing on Thursday.

Liu extended welcome to the guest and updated him on the preparatory work for the 2008 Olympic Games. He said the preparations are progressing smoothly and on schedule in venue construction, sport organization, marketing, communications and cultural activities, Games services and other areas.

Underlining the media service, Liu said BOCOG attaches great importance to the job as it is crucial to staging a high-level Olympics with distinguishing features. BOOCG is making efforts to fulfill bid promises by providing quality and convenient services to the media, thus showcasing the good image of China, as well as the passion, enthusiasm and friendship of the Chinese people.

Liu, who is also member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and secretary of Beijing Municipal CPC Committee, briefed the guest on how BOCOG has engaged in the Olympic education program targeting 400 million elementary and secondary school students, a feature of the 2008 Games. The naming of 556 Olympic Education Model schools nationwide, of which 200 are located in Beijing, is an important move to disseminate Olympic knowledge and popularized the Olympic Movement, he said.

Liu told Murdoch that Beijing is currently striving to develop the cultural and creative industry, making it a pillar industry in the capital city. He hoped News Corporation to use its global resources and international platforms to strengthen cooperation with Beijing in this area.

Murdoch said his company has paid great attention to Beijing's preparation for the Olympic Games and he feels happy with Beijing's achievements in this field. News Corporation will continue its active coverage of the Olympic preparations which will enhance understanding of people of other nations about Beijing and China.

BOCOG Executive Vice President Jiang Xiaoyu attended the meeting.
