In the table tennis bronze medal match last evening, Guo Yue opened the way for China's clean sweep of the women's singles by beating Singapore's Li Jia Wei 11-6, 14-12, 9-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-4.

The 20-year-old Guo, ranked No 2 in the world, struggled at times against Beijing-born Li, 27, the world's sixth-ranked player, before retaking the offensive. The 53-min match featured many fast rallies, with both opponents dealing each other blistering topspin shots to the corners.

It was also the second consecutive Games where Li faltered at such a stage. At the 2004 Athens Games, she missed out on bronze after losing to the Republic of Korea's Kim Kyung-ah.
