World discus champion Gerd Kanter of Estonia consolidated his iron grip on the sport by winning the Olympic men's gold yesterday.

The 29-year-old Estonian sealed the medal with his winning throw of 68.82m.

Piotr Malachowski of Poland took the silver with 67.82m and Lithuania's defending double Olympic champion Virgilijus Alekna claimed bronze with 67.79m.

Kanter turned in his golden throw on the fourth of his six attempts.

Prior to that throw, Malachowski's best toss of 67.82m had stood as the one to beat since the second round.

The final was expected to be a three-way contest involving giants Alekna, Kanter and Iran's Asian record holder Ehsan Hadadi.

But Hadadi surprisingly failed to qualify for the final, leaving Kanter and 36-year-old Alekna battling it out for the title.
