Updated: 2008-08-12 08:55 Russia's fencing star Stanislav Pozdniakov will take to the stage today in men's individual sabre fencing competition.
The 34-year-old is a veteran of the Atlanta 1996 Games and has five Olympic medals to his name, including four golds. He has 17 world championship medals and won the world cup earlier this year in Moscow. But it was in the United States where he last took gold at this event. His main competition will come from Italy's Aldo Montano, Mihai Covaliu of Romania, and Hungarian Zsolt Nemcsik at the Fencing Hall of the National Convention Center in Beijing. Montano, ranked world No 3, won individual gold at Athens in 2004 and won silver in the team event. (China Daily 08/12/2008 page19) |
