Brazil showed its gold medal credentials in women's volleyball, crushing six-time winner Russia in straight sets yesterday.

The Russian team had beaten Brazil in the 2006 world championships, but was crushed 25-14, 25-14, 25-16 in yesterday's Pool B game. Said its Italian coach Giovanni Caprara: "Brazil are playing really beautiful volleyball. They play with an incredible speed and really put you under pressure."

Hosts China were also victorious in their tie against Poland last night, winning 22-25, 25-15, 25-20, 25-22.

Three-time winner Cuba was also in dominant mood, crushing the United States 25-15, 26-24, 25-17 in a Pool A encounter.

In Pool B, European champions Italy picked up its second straight win with a comfortable 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 victory over Kazakhstan, with Francesca Piccinini top scoring with 12 points.

Impressive Serbia had no trouble against Algeria, winning in straight sets 25-14, 25-13, 25-13.
