![]() ... And long wait over for Salazar
(China Daily)
Updated: 2008-08-12 08:50 Diego Salazar of Colombia had something to prove when he stepped up onto the podium. In Athens in 2004, a wrist injury prevented him from finishing. On his first attempt at the snatch, his right wrist doubled back, the weights dropped and with them went his Olympic hopes. The winner of the Panamerican Games in 2007 was seeded No 12 entering into the Games but he pulled off an impressive performace to take silver. He lifted 138kg in the snatch and 167kg in the clean and jerk for 305kg - not enough to beat Zhang Xiangxiang's 319kg but ahead of the 298kg lifted by third place Triyatno of Indonesia. Colombia's Oscar Figueroa didn't finish, after his right hand gave way in all three of his attempts in the snatch. Umurbek Bazarbayev of Turkmenistan, Im Yong-su of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Ji Hunmin of Republic of Korea also did not finish. Ji and Im were second and third after the snatch but both bombed in the clean and jerk event. Figueroa walked off the stage with stoic calm but broke into tears in the staging area.
