As Japan's grip on world judo loosens, China will enjoy more chances to win medals but face more challenges from other rising powers in Europe and South America.

China's gold medal hopefuls are still mainly among the women. Though "Super Mom" Xian Dongmei has the experience of winning gold in the 52 kg at the Athens Games, it is not certain she will win every match in Beijing. China's biggest hopes are Tong Wen in the open category and Yang Xiuli in the 78 kg.
