>Nobel Prize goes to Mo Yan

The Swedish Academy announced Thursday that it had awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Literature to Chinese author Mo Yan. The prize is worth 8m Swedish kronor, about RMB7.49m. Mo Yan said late Thursday that he was "overjoyed and terrified" at the news.

--"Through a mixture of fantasy and reality, historical and social perspectives, Mo Yan has created a world reminiscent in its complexity of those in the writings of William Faulkner and Gabriel García Márquez, at the same time finding a departure point in old Chinese literature and in oral tradition," the citation for the award declared.
--He was described as a writer "who with hallucinatory realism merges folk tales, history and the contemporary."

Mo was born in 1955 in Gaomi county, Shandong, the son of farmers. He left school during the "cultural revolution" to work, first in agriculture and later in a factory. In 1976 he joined the People's Liberation Army and began to study literature and write.

Global household wealth will grow by nearly 50% in the next 5 years to $330 trillion, with the Chinese overtaking the Japanese as the world's 2nd richest people, Credit Suisse said in a report Wednesday, Reuters reported.
It has been found that Hong Kong residents start paying by credit card at an average age of 24, according to a new survey covering 506 people who defaulted on their cards, Wen Wei Po reported. It was found that they ran up bills of an average of HK$6,685 by credit card every month and owed to the banks as much as HK$76,790 on average. The survey also found that up to 55% possessed 3.8 credit cards on average and some have as many as 30. Monthly credit card bills of Hong Kong people born in the 1980s account for 36% of their wages, and have become a huge obstacle for life plans such as buying a house and getting married.

US artist Peter Max arrived in Shanghai Thursday in search of his childhood nanny when he took shelter as a Jewish refugee in the city, China News Service reported. Max was born in Berlin, Germany, in 1937. He was taken by his parents to Shanghai to take shelter when he was about one and lived in Hongkou district for 10 years. The nanny, who Max called "Ama", was a few years older than him and taught him to draw. Max has painted for 7 US presidents, namely Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush Sr, Clinton, Bush and Obama.

>Eat chocolate, win Nobels
A study ties chocolate consumption to the number of Nobel Prize winners a country has. The higher a country's chocolate consumption, the more Nobel laureates it spawns per capita. No, this does not appear in a tabloid. It's in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine, which published this fact online Wednesday. The author Dr Franz Messerli writes that there is evidence that flavanols (黄烷醇) in green tea, red wine and chocolate can help "in slowing down or even reversing" age-related mental decline.

Switzerland leads in chocolate consumption and Nobels. The US is in the middle of the pack with the Netherlands, Ireland, France, Belgium and Germany. At the bottom are China, Japan and Brazil.

--My mom will go bananas when she finds out I crashed her car.
To go bananas意思是to go mildly crazy。
