'黑格比'恣肆粤普降暴雨
Super typhoon Hagupit, which made landfall in Maoming, Guangdong, on Wednesday morning packing winds at 200 kmph, has brought torrential rain and high waves to the Pearl River Delta. Hagupit has weakened into a typhoon and will continue to trail off as it moves northwestward at 25 kmph over the next few hours.
超强台风"黑格比"24日凌晨登陆广东茂名，风速达到每小时200公里。受台风"黑格比"影响，广东珠江口及其以西近海普遍出现巨浪狂涛，珠三角地区普降暴雨。当地气象台表示，黑格比已减弱为台风，预计未来继续以25公里左右的时速向西北偏西方向移动，强度逐渐减弱。

Japan's House of Representatives Wednesday elected Taro Aso, the new president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, as the nation's 92nd PM. Aso garnered 337, or 71%, of a total of 478 valid ballots at the lower house. Earlier, PM Yasuo Fukuda and his cabinet handed in their expected resignations. Aso will name a new cabinet lineup Wednesday evening.
在24日下午举行的临时国会众议院首相指名选举中，日本执政的自民党新总裁麻生太郎当选为日本第92任首相。麻生获得了众议院478张有效票中的337票，支持率达71%。福田内阁已在当日上午的内阁会议上集体辞职，麻生将于今晚组成新内阁。

Seven students from the Cheung Kong School of Journalism and Communication of Shantou University have been covering the ongoing US presidential election, in Washington DC since August 18. They will remain there till the end of the 3-month election. Meanwhile, Ma Hui and Jiang Lin from the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central Committee also attended the US Democratic national convention as observers last month, the first time in the Party's history.

Japan's largest bank, Mitsubishi UFJ, said Monday that it would acquire 10-20% of Morgan Stanley, while Nomura Holdings, Japan's largest brokerage house, also announced it had picked up Lehman's Asia-Pacific franchise. Insiders say the Japanese banks acted out of a need for overseas expansion.

French company Novalac said Tuesday it ordered the withdrawal of a batch of powdered baby milk sold exclusively in pharmacies after traces of salmonella were found in the feces of 8 babies. The batch in question consisted of some 4500 cartons, and had been on sale since early July, it said.

Transparency International measured the perceived levels of public-sector corruption in 180 countries recently. The study ranked Denmark, New Zealand, Sweden, Singapore and Finland as the 5 least corrupt nations, with Afghanistan, Haiti, Iraq, Myanmar and Somalia as the 5 most corrupt countries.

Dalian Haichang's defender Feng Xiaoting (see photo) said in an interview with domestic media that he wants to leave the Chinese Super League and move to Series A during the European transfer window this winter. His European manager will come to China next month and begin negotiations with Dalian. Italian media reported earlier AC Siena was planning to buy the Chinese talent.
