Passion and pride were filling the hearts of Chinese watching the big farewell party at the Bird's Nest Sunday evening. People joined the countdown from 10, while the numbers were displayed via fireworks. At 21:25, the Olympic flame slowly went out and a huge tower elevated at the center of the field with performances simulating the flame.
北京奥运会24日晚完美落幕，全国观众满怀激情和自豪观看了闭幕式。在闭幕式开始前的倒计时最后10秒，"鸟巢"体育场上空利用烟花打出巨大阿拉伯数字，人们也自发地一起倒数。带着太多留恋与不舍，奥运圣火在21时25分缓缓熄灭，场地中的巨大高塔则在精彩表演中"幻化"为燃烧的圣火，象征着圣火永远燃烧在人们心中。

Saying the Beijing Olympic Games as "truly exceptional," International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge praised the Games and thanked the people of China, all the volunteers and the BOCOG at the closing ceremony. The athletes from 204 countries and regions also expressed satisfaction with the Games. Members of the US synchronized swimming team held up a sign with "Thank you, China" during the Games Saturday.
奥运会闭幕式上，国际奥委会主席罗格先生盛赞北京奥运会"真正的无与伦比"，并感谢中国人民、志愿者和北京奥组委。来自204个国家和地区的运动员也对北京奥运表示满意。23日，美国花样游泳队的姑娘们在进入比赛场馆时曾特意打出"谢谢你，中国"的中英文横幅。

Beijing passed the Olympic host baton to London, host city of the 2012 Olympic Games, on Sunday night at the closing ceremony. The latter gave an 8-minute stage performance that saw Beckham kick a football to the crowd from the top of a red double-decker bus.
24日晚，在北京奥运会闭幕式上，北京和2012年夏季奥运会主办城市伦敦进行了会旗交接。伦敦准备的8分钟表演也呈现在人们眼前，其中一大亮点是贝克汉姆在一辆红色双层巴士上向场地中的人群踢出一个足球，以特别方式表达伦敦的邀请。

Foreign media spoke highly of the Beijing Olympics. AP said China concluded its debut as Olympic host after 16 days of near-flawless logistics and superlative athletic achievement. Reuters said, Beijing has wowed the visiting world with its superlative venues, smiling volunteers, glitch-free transport and seamless organization.

Olympics chief Rogge Sunday singled out the stoic attitude in defeat of US shooter Emmons (see photo) as the most touching moment of the Games. For the 2nd straight Olympics, Emmons lost a gold medal with a mistake on the final shot. Rogge also said the sight of Georgian and Russian athletes embracing was an embodiment of the Olympic spirit.

The total number of medals reaches 100, the highest since China took part in the Olympic Games. 38 world records were renewed. US swimmer Michael Phelps and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt emerged as the super stars.

A record 4.4b people, about 2/3 of the world's population, watched the Beijing Olympic events from Aug. 8-17, making the Games the most watched in history, the Nielsen Company said Sunday. The company drew TV audience data from 38 countries and regions. The viewing numbers for the Games exceeded those achieved by the 2004 Athens Olympics, which attracted 3.9b viewers. The 2000 Sydney Games had 3.6b viewers.

The performers worked hard to prepare for the closing ceremony. Dancing volunteers set out to the Bird's Nest for practice at daybreak to keep secret their performance, some of them were so tired during rest time they slept on the ground. The kongfu performers wore especially-made shoes as heavy as 15kg, practicing for 1 year to jump freely in them.
为了奥运会闭幕式，表演者进行了辛苦的排练。因保密需要，舞蹈志愿者每次去鸟巢排练都在凌晨，很多志愿者休息时直接躺在地上睡。功夫小子们所穿的鞋子是特制的，每双重15公斤，他们为穿着鞋自如跳跃练了一年。

When American superfish Michael Phelps and Australia's hot swimmer Stephanie Rice posed together at a promotion for Speedo - playfully groping each other as a photographer snapped them last Tuesday, it set tongues wagging. Foreign athletes opened a flea market before the closing ceremony, trying to exchange clothing. Swiss athletes displayed their game-clothes, shorts, T-shirts, even socks and shoes on the lawn in front of their dormitory. The market soon attracted many athletes, and business went on quite well.
奥运会闭幕式前夕，不少运动员在楼下摆摊开起跳蚤市场，用自己的衣服换其它代表团衣服做纪念。瑞士队员把比赛服、短裤、T恤甚至鞋袜在楼前草地摆了一地。跳蚤市场很快就吸引了大量运动员光顾，生意火爆。
