Approved by the State Council and founded in May 1992, Kunming Economic and Technological Development Zone is located in the east of Kunming and has a planned area of 9.8 square kilometers. Lying between the main urban area of Kunming and Chenggong New City, part of the New Kunming Project under construction, the zone plays an increasingly important role in promoting industrial integration and economic growth.
The zone focuses on making full use of foreign investment, promoting modern manufacturing and optimizing export structure so as to develop the high and new technology industry and the service industry with high added value, thus creating a multi-functional and comprehensive industrial district out of the national economic and technological development zone. With the investment environment continuously improving, the zone has absorbed foreign investment of over 17 billion yuan ($2.76 billion) from such countries and regions as the US, the UK, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan, forming an industrial cluster featuring tobacco processing, machinery manufacturing, electronic information and biotechnology. With a good natural environment, strong inter-industry cooperation capacity and complete ancillary facilities such as a school and hospital, the zone has become one of the biggest new industrial districts of Yunnan province.
