Urumqi Economic and Technological Development Zone (Toutunhe district) signed a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project with China Railway 20 Bureau Group Corporation and Beijing Huaxia Tongrun Technology Co Ltd on Nov 17.

With a total investment of 8.4 billion yuan (1.27 billion US dollars), the project focuses on the renovation of the zone's old urban districts, covering a total area of 0.51 square kilometers. Nearly 20,000 local residents will benefit from the district's upgrade.

Zhang Mingliang, vice director of the finance department of the zone, said that in recent years the zone has accelerated financing innovation through promoting PPP financing to safeguard the steadfast development of local economic and social development.

Zhang Junxiang, head of the zone's administrative committee, said that the renovation and upgrading of old urban districts is a vital part of Urumqi's efforts to improve locals' livelihood. The zone will provide high-efficient services to safeguard the project's construction.

At the beginning of November, the renovation of city blocks and streets in the zone has been completed after four months of construction. In line with all of China's efforts to enhance environmental protection, the zone also planted green belts of trees and shrubs along the roads. Finishing the renovations done thus far, storefront signs of buildings on both sides of the roads were painted in unified colors.

The renovation project included 61 buildings, two schools, 289 stores and 711 households. 1,871 meters of cables were paved underground and 1,026 manhole covers were replaced on the motor and non-motorized vehicle lanes. It also replaced 17,677 meters of curbstones and paved 56,116 square meters of sidewalks for citizens to stride peacefully on.
