The city of Urumqi gave 6,232 low-income families a chance to get more affordable housing through a lottery system, on Tuesday, Xinjiangnet.com.cn has reported.

Of the low-income families, 1,138 get rental housing units of 35 to 60 square meters, including at least 270 migrant families, in the city's first allotment of this kind, especially in the case of migrant workers.

There are 7,626 units of affordable housing in all, in this round of allotments, including 4,046 low-cost units, 1,599 units for rent, and 1,981 for sale. Monthly rents run from 0.98 yuan/sq-m to 1.98 yuan.

In addition, 250 families that applied for the affordable housing but were not accepted this time will get another chance by the end of this year, according to the city's housing management.
