Xinjiang Intl Dance Festival off to a rousing start in Urumqi

Famous dance troupes from around the world have gathered in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, for the 3rd Xinjiang International Dance Festival, with a grand opening ceremony the evening of July 20, featuring a combination of songs and ethnic dances, Xinjiang Daily has reported.

The festival, which continues to August 5, has a theme of "Harmonious China, Colorful world", with 21 dance troupes providing several dozen performances in the city's main stadium and eight support venues in the cities of Korla and Shihezi, during the two weeks.

The dancers include 11 troupes came from Belgium, Georgia, Germany, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, Kazakhstan, Mauritius, Mongolia, Russia, and Turkey and five from China’s provinces, and five from local areas.

Support activities include an Internet dance festival, a gift competition, song-and-dance photograph competition, and a photo exhibit.

Cai Wu, China’s Culture Minister and honorary director of the 3rd Xinjiang International Dance Festival, had this to say: "The biennial dance festival is an important window on our country's ethnic culture and an efficient source of national unity and an open site for Chinese culture."

Tickets price for the performances range from 40 to 260 yuan and can be obtained on the Internet, at branches of Bank of China in Urumqi, or at the People's Theater and performance sites.
