A volunteer tree-planting campaign was organized by the Urumqi High-tech Industrial Development Zone on April 22, resulting in the addition of a 150 mu (10 hectares) green area along Weiyi Road.
More than 4,000 local citizens, including government leaders, officials, soldiers and company representatives, participated in the campaign to plant more than 12,000 nursery-grown trees of eight varieties, such as catalpa, ash and bitter-berry.
“The green belt along Weiyi Road is a vital forestry component of the zone. The campaign will help the high-tech zone to build a comfortable living environment and perfect the ecological corridor in the region,” said Guo Zhaojin, director of the zone’s forestry and gardening management bureau.
Guo added that the Urumqi High-tech Industrial Development Zone has also launched a greening project with a total investment of 2.3 billion yuan ($334 million). An investment of 860 million yuan will be processed this year to add 3,000 mu of greenery and forest in the zone.
