From July 12 to 13, temperatures in Urumqi city’s main districts surpassed 34℃. On July 13, the highs in Toutunhe district, High-tech Zone, and Midong districts hit 36.1℃, 37.2℃ and 37.6℃ respectively. In response, Urumqi’s government has taken a series of steps to battle the heat.

According to the city’s Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Operation Company, air conditioning has been checked in all BRT vehicles, and free water and medical kits will be provided in the company’s 18 busiest stations.

To ensure an adequate supply of drinking water for its residents, the Urumqi government has cut industrial water consumption by 40 percent. It also requires urban infrastructure projects to use water mainly between 11 pm to 6 am to avoid the peak times for water consumption.

The Urumqi human resources and social security bureau announced that laborers working in high-temperature environments will receive monthly subsidies of at least 70 yuan ($11.3).
