Southern Airlines has received approval from Taiwan's aviation authorities for three direct flights from Urumqi, the capital of the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, to the city of Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with a maiden voyage expected on March 12, according to a China News Agency report of March 1. A Boeing B757 will be used for the direct flights, with dates set for March 12, 19, and 26.

China Southern Airlines representatives have said that the above three flights are already in their system, but they are still in the application process and are not ready for booking.

Of the current 49 direct cross-Straits flights from the mainland, the Urumqi flight goes the farthest, and takes about five and one-half hours. There are eight new ones planned for the mainland this year -- Urumqi, Inner Mongolia's Hohhot and Hailar, Zhangjiajie in Hunan, Lijiang in Yunnan, Xining in Qinghai, Yinchuan in Ningxia, and Weihai in Shandong.
