The first group of Karamay high school students from deprived backgrounds has completed their applications for exemption from tuition fees, by the Dec 10 deadline.

High school students suffering economic hardship in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region can receive a free education, according to the education policy of the region.

Karamay has initiated this policy for the autumn semester, as part of regional efforts to broaden access to education.

All students from deprived backgrounds enrolled in Karamay high schools, no matter where they come from, are entitled to apply for the tuition fee exemption. Each student can receive 1,200 yuan ($173) per year to relieve the financial burden on their family.

Applicants should fill in a registration form with their basic information and family situation and hand it to the school they study at. The approved application materials of students will be displayed publicly in schools at least five days before being sent to the Karamay education bureau.

Students can apply for the tuition fee exemption from March, 1 to 20 next year.
