Karamay’s world-renowned Ghost City has been added to a list of finalists to receive a National 5A scenic rating, according to China National Tourism Administration.

The site, located some 100 kilometers northeast of Karamay, in Urho district, is famous for its eerie land formations and the bizarre sound the wind makes as it whistles past them.

The tourism administration carried out inspections of the area in early November, before agreeing to place it on a list for possible National 5A rating – the top tourism rating in the country.

The team looked at the popular tourist site’s tourism resources, such as landscape and infrastructure.

Construction of a resort began in 2000, and since then, roads, utilities, toilets, and a tourist information office, have all been built. In 2013, Karamay first started in its efforts to attain a National 5A rating for the area.
