The Black Oil Mountain of Karamay was added to the list of education bases for science popularization to be built by the Chinese Petroleum Society (CPS) on Sept 22.

Gao Deli, an academician from the Chinese Academy of Science; Zhang Hu, president of the Karamay association for science and technology; and Zhou Fusheng, vice president of CPS, were all in attendance for the unveiling ceremony.

Zhou Fusheng delivered a speech at the ceremony and emphasized the importance of education bases, especially the Black Oil Mountain site.

“The Black Oil Mountain base has become the major platform for CPS to popularize petrochemical science knowledge, and it will play a significant role in the popularization of science and technology among the public,” he said.

The establishment of education bases is part of China’s overall education strategy, and Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) has been working to promote and popularize science knowledge concerning petroleum and petrochemical.

Black Oil (Heiyou) Mountain is located 2,000 meters to the northeast of downtown Karamay and covers an area of about 200,000 square meters. The People’s Government of Karamay erected a 2.5-meter high pyramid granite stele on the mountain top, with the Chinese characters for Heiyou Mountain inscribed on the front.

CAST is the largest national non-governmental organization of scientific and technological workers in China, which also serves as a bridge to link the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government to the country’s science and technology community. It has made great contributions to the prosperity and development of science and technology, to the emergence of large numbers of talented professionals, and to the overall economic and social development in China.
