A dozen middle school students in Karamay, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, took part in "career week" during their summer vacation.

The activity provided students with opportunities to experience five different professions.

Zhao Yuefei and Li Muyao from the Karamay No 7 Middle School and Tang Yuqi from the Karamay High School were deployed to clean buses. The week-long work experience showed how laborious the job was. They called upon all the passengers not to litter buses to ease their burden and keep public order.

Ma Feiyu from Karamay High School and Song Ruoxi from Karamay No 6 Middle School worked as packers at the Lvcheng Dairy Product Company. They learned about the production process of milk and yogurt. Ma said she gained not only working experience, but also perseverance and responsibility. She also learned that money is never easily earned, so she would no longer squander in the future.

Yao Xinyang from Karamay No 7 Middle School and Wu Jiani from Karamay No 1 Middle School experienced cleaner's work. Every day when they finished their work, they felt too tired to even raise their arms. "But what we do is only a quarter of a cleaner's daily task", Wu said. The experience showed them know how hard it is to keep the city clean and tidy. They said they would value cleaners' work and respect them more.

Chen Siming from Karamay No 1 Middle School and Zhu Zilong from Karamay No 7 Middle School worked in a tea milk shop. Their enthusiasm, earnest attitude and improved cooking skills impressed the shop owner. The two boys were delighted to have such an unforgettable experience since it enriched their summer vacation and taught them to get along with colleagues, understand customers' needs and value people's labor.

Tang Jiayi and Wang Zhe from the Karamay No 7 Middle School got a chance to work as press photographers at the Karamay Daily. "It is great to turn my hobby, photography, into career but it takes effort too," said Wang. They said the work was challenging since they had to be ready to record any unexpected event. "It was an educational week: I learned practical shooting skills and built up an elementary awareness of news reports," Tang later summarized.
