On Nov 26, 57 cotton growers in Wuerhe county of Karamay city received cotton subsidies from the government. It was the first time that the government handed out the subsidies directly to farmers instead of going through cotton dealers.

According to Wu Weifeng, deputy township head of Wuerhe county, the cotton subsidy would be handed out to all the cotton growers three times. The first batch covered a cultivated area of 770 acres. With 1,160 yuan ($185) for each acre, the amount of the first batch of subsidies reached nearly 900,000 yuan.

The cotton subsidies were handed out to buyers and factory managers in the past, who later gave them to farmers by increasing the procurement price. But since this June, in order to stabilize the cotton trading market, the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region began to grant subsidies directly to cotton growers to guarantee the growers benefit more practically, Wu said.

"The cotton market is quite gloomy this year, and labor costs keep rising. Consequently, most of the cotton farmers have lost money. But I'm very glad that the government has given us more subsidies. It has made up our loss and encourages me to continue to grow cotton next year," said Xiang Mingjian, a cotton grower who planted 7 acres of cotton and received nearly 20,000 yuan in subsidies.
