Karamay Yardang Ghost Town, located in Urho district, is one of the most attractive and special natural scenic spots in Karamay. In 2005, Yardang Ghost Town in Karamay won recognition as "China's Most Beautiful Yardang Landscape" in the competition of Beautiful Places in China. Currently, Yardang Ghost Town is applying to enter the list of national 5A level tourism attractions.

Yardang Ghost Town has magnificent scenery and is a treasure of geoheritage landscape resources.

Yardang Ghost Town has streamlined hills carved from bedrock and wind abrasion, dust and sand. From a distance, the yardangs look like a huge deserted ancient castle. When wind comes, the ghost town will be full of strange sounds that are just like ghosts yelling. Some people believe that the sounds are the reason people call it a ghost town.

Some old people believe that there are treasures buried in the ghost town by Genghis Khan, founder and emperor of the Mongol Empire. According to a folk tale, when Genghis Khan passed through the town, he and his army suffered from a huge sand storm. Genghis Khan thought that the storm was a ghost asking for money, and he buried his treasures there underground. However, nobody knows if the story is true and where the buried treasures are.

Oscar winning movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and some Chinese kung fu movies such as Seven Swords of Mount Heaven and Warriors of Heaven and Earth were shot in Karamay Yardang Ghost Town. Many tourists from different places around the world have visited to try to find its treasure. Some of them found precious gold silk jade. However, there's no evidence to prove the gold silk jade was buried by Genghis Khan.
