An annual folk horse race is from June 22 to 26 in Huocheng, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Local clubs presented a variety of cultural and athletic performances to visitors at the opening ceremony. The most amazing activities included She Huo, a traditional ritual in Kazakh culture; the Girl Chasing Game, which consists of girls running after Kazakh boys on horses; and the Hada Offering, which is the presentation of a piece of silk as a greeting gift. Visitors also enjoyed a traditional cultural feast at the racetrack.

The five-day horse-racing festival is a grand celebration, and has a long history among Xinjiang ethnic groups. The competitions are 10-km and 15-km races. Each year, the race attracts the best Kazakh herdsmen to compete with each other. Most of them grow up with horses on the prairie and have excellent riding skills.

The prairie and horses are witness to these horseback riders' life stories and have become cultural symbols, which is why these ethnic groups are sometimes called "people on horseback".
