Home to China’s wild cherry plums, Huocheng county in Ili prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is the only producer of wild cherry plums in Asia.

Cherry plums

Cherry plums, also known as wild sour plums, are a precious and endangered fruit species.

The cherry plums are mostly grown in the Western Tianshan Mountains, the Caucasus and Asia Minor.

Cherry plums are a member of the rose family, with various colors, a strong cold hardiness and high nutrition value.

Plums have high amounts of vitamins and amino acids. They boost immunity as well.

Initially plums were served as fresh fruit. Later they were processed into snack foods such as dried plums, preserved plums and plum jam. They are also used as base ingredients in drinks, sweets and pastries.

Daxigou Valley in Huocheng provides favorable conditions for cherry plum cultivation. The valley boasts the only wild cherry plum forest in the world, covering an area of 700 hectares.

Huocheng is now focusing on bionic cultivation to promote cherry plum planting. The area has reached 10,000 mu (666.67 hectares). The county hopes to build the largest cherry plum base in China.
