Chinese yams, also called shanyao, grow well in sandy soil with ample sunshine and appropriate temperature. Huiyuan town in Huocheng county, Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, is endowed with mild climate and soft soil, which provides favorable conditions for the growth of Chinese yams.

Huiyuan has become the second largest planting base of Chinese yams in Xinjiang.

With support from the local government, the town has set up a Chinese yam planting cooperative covering a planting area of 300 mu (20 hectares). The cooperative has helped increase farmer incomes by over 4 million yuan ($650,775). Chinese yam planting has become a new way for locals to increase income.

Huocheng county has set planting standards for pollution-free Chinese yams to promote high-quality Chinese yams and boost production.

Huiyuan’s Chinese yams have a dominant position in Ili’s market, with the majority being transported to Yining, Urumqi, Kuntun and Korla.
