First ultra-high voltage power grid launches in Tianjin
| Updated: 2014-11-05 16:25:42 | (chinadaily.com.cn) |

A 1,000 kilovolt power project linking Xilin Gol League of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region and Shandong province was launched on Nov 4.

A total of 290 transmission towers will be built in North China's Tianjin, with the first batch of 22 transmission towers already having been constructed. As Tianjin's first ultra high voltage power grid project, it pushes forward the development of importing electric power and marks the beginning of Tianjin's UHV era.

Tianjin is a typical energy importer, with 20 percent of its electric power imported. It is estimated that the city's electricity consumption will reach 97 billion kilowatt-hours by 2017 and 112 billion kilowatt-hours by 2020. The maximum load of the electric grid will be 173 billion kilowatt-hours and 212 billion kilowatt-hours respectively.

Furthermore, the city's power deficit will be 5.7 million kilowatts by 2017 and 7.42 million kilowatts by 2020, and will take up 33 percent and 35 percent of the total respectively. Tianjin's rapid economic development is bringing significant power deficit problems.

Simultaneously, the city faces problems such as energy conservation, emission reductions, and environmental protection. All these problems urge the fast establishment of UHV power grid projects to import electricity safely and reliably.

According to the State Grid Corporation of China's project plan, the UHV power project in Tianjin is separated into four parts – two alternating current (AC) projects and two direct current (DC) projects.

One of the AC projects transmits electric power from Xilin Gol League to Shandong, and the other one is from western Inner Mongolia to southern Tianjin. One of the DC projects transmits electric power from Xilin Gol League to East China's Jiangsu province, and the other one is from Hulunbuir League to Shandong province. The construction of these four parts will start next September.

With a length of 515 kilometers, the project covers six districts and counties and 27 villages in Tianjin. The length of the Xilin Gol League-Shandong part of the Tianjin section stretches 150 kilometers.

The project will add 5 million kilowatts of power capacity to the city, which improves the city's imported power percentage to more than 30 percent. Greatly relieving the power deficit problem, the project will increase Tianjin's maximum voltage level from 500 kilovolts to 1,000 kilovolts.

In addition, the project will enhance the voltage storage and improve the service quality of the power distribution. Using resources outside Tianjin will save nine million tons' coal consumption and will reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrous oxides by 26.9 million tons, 810,000 tons, 405,000 tons respectively.

Moreover, the project will guarantee the city's economic development and improve its air quality.
