US phycology experts visit Shanxi University

Rex L. Lowe from Bowling Green State University and Kociolek J. Patrick from University of Colorado, two phycology professors paid a visit to Shanxi University on Jan 5.

Professor Lowe delivered a lecture called “Algae: Rulers of a Green World”, and professor Patrick gave a presentation called “Diatom-Human Interactions”, attracting over 100 college teachers and students to listen to.

Professor Lowe mainly focuses on researching the ecology of freshwater algae, the status and function of algae in river ecosystems, the role of algae in environmental assessment and water resources management. He has published more than 200 papers and 20 books.

From 1991 until now, he has served as chairman of the Great Lakes Aquatic Ecosystem Research Association. He was appointed as a visiting professor at the University of Michigan and Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Currently, he is a visiting professor at the Wisconsin Lake Research Center.

Professor Patrick, internationally renowned algae scientist, is currently the director of the Museum of Natural History. His research interests include the classification and phylogeny of freshwater diatoms, the distribution of freshwater diatoms and their geographical origin, and the screening and utilization of energy microalgae.

He has engaged in diatom taxonomy, systems and evolutionary ecology and ecology for more than 30 years, and published a total of more than 300 papers and 10 books. He was the curator of the California Science Museum; the president of the International Diatoms Association; and the chief editor of Diatom Research. Now he is in charge of the Bibliotheca Diatomologica, Diatom Research and Journal of Phycology.
