Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park at the Shanghai Sheshan National Tourist Resort will hold an activity for families to get a taste of the traditional Chinese art of shadow puppetry.

The activity will consist of watching shadow puppet shows, making shadow puppets and attending lectures on shadow puppetry, allowing participants to gain insights into the culture and the stories behind the art.

The activity will be held on the morning of Jan 23 and the afternoon of Feb 12 in Fulin Teenager Village in Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park, which is a place committed to helping visitors learn more about traditional Chinese culture in an immersive way.

Chinese shadow puppetry is an artistic form of theatre acted out by using colorful puppets made from leather or paper, and includes music and singing. Performed by puppeteers using rods, the figures create the illusion of moving images on a translucent cloth screen that’s illuminated from the back.

As an intangible cultural heritage, Chinese shadow puppetry also teaches cultural history, social beliefs, oral traditions and local customs. It spreads knowledge, promotes cultural values and entertains the community.
