Three flavors of qingtuan, a seasonal delicacy eaten during the Qingming Festival, are currently on sale at Yuluxe Sheshan, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel at the Shanghai Sheshan National Tourist Resort, from March 16 to April 6.

Qingtuan, or green rice balls, are widely consumed in China's Jiangnan area - the region south of the Yangtze River - around Qingming Festival. They are usually made from glutinous rice mixed with pounded mugwort - an edible wild herb thought to prevent toxic insect bites.

Mugwort is an aromatic herb that is often used to treat asthma, inflammation and viral infections. The leaves and buds of the mugwort, which are picked just after the arrival of spring, are smashed and turned into a juice that is used to soak the rice dough, giving the snack its distinctive green hue.

While the most common fillings are red bean paste and black sesame paste, many businesses introduce new flavors every year to set themselves apart from the competition.
