The Shanghai Chenshan Botanical Garden received a certificate of international registration from the United Kingdom's Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) for its success in orchid breeding, local media reported on Jan 5.

The new breed, named Grammandium SAJVOL Episode, is Chenshan Botanical garden's fifth orchid breed to be certified by the RHS, the leading gardening charity dedicated to advancing horticulture and promoting good gardening.

Chenshan Botanical Garden spent eight years working to combine the genus of an African orchid and a Latin American orchid.

The mother orchid used to produce the new breed can be found in the forests of eastern Madagascar. Its fake bulbs are strangely quadrangular and the fleshy leaves very noticeable. The father orchid is found in Brazil and Bolivia. Its pseudo bulbs are conical and the flowers a tender yellow color.

The name Grammandium SAJVOL Episode echoes with the cultivation team's success in writing a harmonious genetic episode featuring the characteristics of African and Latin American orchids.

The orchidaceae are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with blooms that are often colorful and fragrant. They are commonly known as orchids.

Chenshan Botanical Garden is home to over 9,000 distinctive plant specie such as the magnoliaceae, roseceae, cerasus, malus mill, iris, aquatic plants, xeric plants, herb plants, economic plants, as well as rare and endangered plants.

Since its opening, the garden has received many domestic and foreign tourists and bloomed into a window for Shanghai and the city's local botanical technology and culture.
