Over 10,000 Shanghai residents participated in the annual hike at Sheshan National Resort on Jan 1.

Participants, wearing red waistcoats, set out from Shanghai Happy Valley at 7:00 am and jogged to East Sheshan Garden. The hike provided visitors with an opportunity to take in the area's stunning winter scenery.

Now in its 13th year, the hike has developed into one of the most influential events in Songjiang district and has become a popular way to ring in the New Year. It has also spawned an interest in body-building.

This year, organizers set up a signing wall at the top of the mountain for participants to leave their names and hang red ribbons on designated trees for good luck in the New Year.

"It is a tradition in China to go hiking on the first day of the New Year," said a participant surnamed Lee. Lee hopes the activity will bring good luck and success to his family in the coming year.
