Railways in Yantai are connected to arterial lines in China. The Qingdao-Yanai-Weihai-Rongcheng intercity railway opened for business, on Dec 28, 2014. It takes only one hour to travel between Yantai and Qingdao. The Yantai-Dalian rail ferry has reduced the distance from Northeast China to Shandong and east coastal areas by 1,600 km.
Yantai is a pilot port for land-sea transportation of truck cargo between China and South Korea. The preliminary study on the Sino (Yantai)-South Korea rail ferry is now under way. The bridge between Changdao Island and Penglai has been approved. The Bohai Strait tunnel between Yantai and Dalian has been included in the national plan. When completed, it will connect the Liaodong and Shandong peninsulas across the sea. It will take only one hour to go from Yantai to Dalian.
