Every year, the River flushes down carrying about 1600 million-ton clay and sand, of which about 1200 million-ton sediments are deposited at the delta. In this way, the Delta wetland encroach the Bohai Sea by 1.5-3 kilometers every year, making new land 23-28 square kilometers. Gradually 20-26.7 million square meters sea area has been changed into wetland. The experts said that over the past 5 years 266.7 million square meters land have been created because of the sediments carried by the Yellow River and the new land is still growing.
Under the Yellow River Delta buries rich oil which has created the second largest oil field in China---Shengli Oil Field.
Late autumn is the best time for exploring the estuary wetland. We drove to the Nature Reserve which is 60 kilometers east to Dong Ying City. Oil derricks and limitless bulrush came to our sight frequently. Groups of widgeons and egrets flew from the bulrush to welcome you.
More than 50 photographers from all the country were taking photos as participants of “The Yellow River Delta in the Eyes of Journalists”.
“The delta provides an ideal place for biologists doing their research and photographers creating pieces of good work,” the director of the Nature Reserve, Nie Liying said.
According to Nie, the large-area shallow sea and wetland have developed into an important stop for migrant birds from northeast inner lands and the west Pacific. The wetland provides a good place for the birds to breed and live through the winter. There are 1917 kinds of biology, among which 50 kinds are under state protection; more than 600 square kilometers area of bulrush, willow and bushes; 1524 kinds of wild animals, of which amphioxus, cowfish and Sungkiang weever are under state protection; about one hundred kinds of wild plants, of which the endangered Wild Soybean under state protection is widely distributed; 187 kinds of birds, of which red-crowned crane, swan, white crane, bustard, ern and Chinese goosander are under the first-class state-protection.
