Container libraries emerge in Xi'an

Updated: 2017-05-08

Libraries repurposed from shipping containers have recently been distributed throughout Xi’an, attracting local residents to experience the joys of reading.

Equipped with automatic book borrowing machines, users can read and borrow books from the library using their resident identity card. Hoping to publicize traditional reading over the current trend of digital reading, the Xi’an Public Library have distributed the containers as an extension of their branch.

According to statistics released by China’s Ministry of Culture, 60 percent of the country’s public libraries are qualified. Local governments have also been making efforts to construct mobile libraries to promote the sharing of knowledge and information.

This year, Xi’an has carried out more than 200 reading activities to encourage local residents to make reading a daily habit.
